About Us

The History of Alhambra Speech and Debate

Alhambra Speech and Debate was first founded by Gregory Cullen in the year 1971.

Through the 33 years, Alhambra S&D team has experienced several great accomplishments, thanks espicially in part too Mr. Cullen. At one point Alhambra hosted the State Championships. Thanks to the guidance of Mr. Cullen, several debaters have gone to great heights in debate.

Alhambra is part of the Southern California Debate League, or the SCDL. We at this point also plan to compete on the National Circuit.

The People of Alhambra S&D

The success of the Alhambra Speech and Debate team is due to the members and their abilities to act more as a family then simply as a team. The team is most known for its small team size, but with capable debaters. The teams 50 member size, makes group discussions and communicating overall much easier, something that we value as essential for any team to do good.

The team consists of members that all come different aspects of life, bringing in entirely different personalities. But one thing, or rather two things that they all have in common, is the ability to communicate well with everyone and also their interest in debate.

This year, with contributions from all the members, varsity and novice alike, odds of winning for the whole team are higher than ever. Last year saw an astounding list of achievements.
  • Anthony Wei and Johnny Wang (or Alhambra WW) qualified for state in Policy Debate after placing first at Fall Varsity and Spring Varsity, While they were at State, they were ranked 13th in the state.
  • Alhambra WW got 5th at National Qualifiers.
  • Dorothy Chan and Samantha Chen advanced after 4 preliminary rounds of Duo Interp at Berkeley(Quarter Finals), then they got 8th place at State Qualifiers, and then 4th at National Qualifiers.
  • Dorothy also qualified for state in Lincoln Douglas Debate.
  • Lena Chen qualified for state in Foreign Extemp.
  • Ryan Khoo and Joseph Lin, our ragtag team, advanced to 8th place in Policy Debate at National Qualifiers, with one box of evidence.
  • Ashley Cardenas got 8th place at Dramatic Interp at National Qualifiers.
  • Charles Huang and Tai Giang got 5th place in Parliamentary Debate for State Qualifiers.
  • Rona Yang and Ashley Cardenas got 5th place in Public Forum Debate at National Qualifiers.
  • Jeffery Shoung got 6th place at Novice Championship in LD and Extemp and 1st at Spring Varsity for Novice LD Debate.
  • Ryan Khoo and Jeffery Shoung got 5th place at Public Forum Debate at Spring Varsity.
  • Christine Chang got 1st in Lincoln Douglas Debate at Spring Varsity.

This is just a small list of acheivements from the previous year. One step that we've taken to maintain our records and improve our overall acheivements is to train incoming novices early on. This year will definitely be as successful, if not better, than the previous year.
